Project Complete, Mostly Successful

Project Complete, Mostly Successful

My sister gave me a ROKR Cello Music Box kit a while ago that I finally finished: I made mistakes, I broke pieces, but it still looks great and in the end the parts will move – if I rotate the gear manually. The music box is hooked up, but just doesn’t have enough power to turn the gears itself. I’m very “heavy-handed” with stuff – whether it’s sewing, writing, assembling stuff. I always crank things way down, pull things…

Security Cameras

Security Cameras

I’ve been looking to replace my existing security camera system for a while now. I had cameras installed around the outside of the house and 1 in the garage when I first moved in. They are all coax runs, and are powered by the coax connection. Everything worked great until last year. First, I stopped being able to use the app on my phone to view the cameras. Just flat out told me my 2 year old Pixel 6 was…

Just Stuff

Just Stuff

Been a rather interesting week of discovery for me. First I stumbled on an article that talked about hosting your own audiobook server using AudioBookShelf. I have quite the collection spanning a couple of different services. I pretty much gave up an Audible a while ago and now purchase my books from Libro.fm – always DRM free. Once in a great while I still stumble across a book that’s an “Audible exclusive”, so I still have the account but don’t…

De-Googled Phone

De-Googled Phone

I took the leap, I’m now using a “De-Googled” phone! I had looked at Murena in the past, but it’s locked to just the UK market for now. I’m not sure if they’ll ever open up in the US market, I don’t think they can keep up with that kind of demand. Too bad, their phones seemed really cool and it’s nice to get one that’s already all set up for you! Nope, I went with using the GrapheneOS on…

Busy Vacation

Busy Vacation

Ended up a lot busier over my Christmas vacation than I planned. My fault, Google Fiber was finally available in my neighborhood and I signed up for the first available slot and didn’t hold off until after vacation. First step was the outside install where they run the fiber from the street to my house. They were able to go under the lawn, nothing was dug up! Second step was the install inside my house which was scheduled for New…

Happy Holidays!

Happy Holidays!

It both does and doesn’t seem like Christmas is only 4 days away. I hate when Thanksgiving happens so late in November, it throws everything off. No chance for a white Christmas for us this time around. Christmas Eve is supposed to get up to 52 degrees, dropping to 42 on Christmas day. My “12 days of Christmas Vacation” start today, I’ll be returning on Jan 2. It’s been pretty crazy at work lately, I’m looking forward to the break….

My Crazy 24 Hours

My Crazy 24 Hours

Friday, Nov 15 Saturday, Nov 16 So, what happened? With all the construction around me I have been having “brown outs” with my electricity. One was bad enough I had to reset clocks on microwaves and stuff. Or did my candle warmer trip the breaker when it died? Who knows? But it’s been 24 hours since this mess started and I’m no longer out of pocket for about 2k. I just need to make sure all the cancellations go through…

All the swear words.

All the swear words.

For the fifth time in about a week my internet is down. It went down 3 times in 10 days in September as well, so today marks the 8th outage. Each time it’s the same thing, I’m working fine with no issues, I get a text they’ve detected a problem in my area, then 10-15 minutes later I’ve no internet. It’s always down for at least an hour, usually during regular business hours. I searched for “frequent Xfinity outages Utah”…

Tech Stuff

Tech Stuff

The quest to De-Google continues, but is starting to hit some limits. First I want to call out the irony that my personal phone is actually a Google Pixel 6 and I’m waiting with bated breath for Google Fiber to come to my neighborhood. It may seem laughable that I’m trying to disentangle myself from their apps and services when the actual hardware I rely on to do my job and live my life are from Google. Well… Except for…
