Hobbies, Tech, Books and Games

I guess all those things can actually be considered hobbies… 😁

I’ve finished the quilts from the “Old Made” theme. The company who created it always has fun Halloween fabrics. This one was made to look like a rather creepy looking card game with a sewing theme.

Here’s a tablerunner I did with some of the “cards”:

Closer look at the cards

This final quilt is going to the machine quilter tomorrow. It’s my first time doing applique on a quilt and so far, I’m not a fan. The “moon” and windows are the applique pieces, the name of the quilt kit is “Cabin Chills”:

Fun fabric! This year, they’ve come up with an Alice in Wonderland kind of motif and I’m just waiting for some fun patterns/kits to come out. I’m great at following instructions, not so much with coming up with my own patterns. 😆

I finished another mini lego kit from the “Secret Life of Pets” movies. These go pretty fast, I usually get them done in 2-3 evenings:

I received a lighting kit for my birthday to apply to the Lego Bonsai kit I did a while ago. Lots of light!

Now if I could just apply this energy to a really kick-ass exercise regimen, I’d be in stellar shape in no time! 😆😉

I’ve not enjoyed the last couple of books for the book club. But I’ve found a couple of rather fun books:

  • A Deadly Education – Think Harry Potter except the school you attend wants to kill you.
  • Changling – A mashup of Harry Potter and My Fair Lady
  • A Wizard’s Guide to Defensive Baking – Audible kept recommending this one to me and I finally gave in. Fun book that had me picturing the Gingerbread Man from Shrek a lot.
  • Murderbot Diaries – Probably my favorite series at the moment! Most are short novellas. He’s just an anti-social construct that wants people to leave him alone so he can watch media (shows) all day. But will absolutely straight-up murder anyone/anything trying to hurt the crew he’s contracted to protect.

Haven’t played board games the last couple of weeks. I didn’t feel great one day and it got canceled the next week. The games we’ve played so far:

  • Lords of Waterdeep – This is based on a town setting from D&D, so I really enjoyed this one. Lots going on in the game, but fun.
  • The Hunger – You play as a group of vampires that set out to “feed” for the night, but you have to get back to the castle by the end of the 15th round or you die in the sunlight. You can actually have no winners on this one.

For the tech header of this, I’m trying to get back in to ripping my movie collection to put on my Plex server. Any Roku device in your house can connect to your Plex server to show your movies and shows and such. I gave this the ol’ “college effort” a few years back and lost a lot of my work when a hard-drive gave out. The problem with this is the ripping. Software wasn’t great back then, especially when dealing with subtitles and whatnot. Getting a high-quality version of your disc is a pain. Blu-rays are even more complicated.

But I’ve got a couple new tools to try out. Also, it looks like the Plex server itself can pull in subtitle files for you on the fly off the internet, so I don’t need to worry about that so much nowadays. Yes, I watch most everything with subtitles these days. Yeah, I’ve probably lost a bit of my hearing over the years. Coupled with the music tracks being so much louder than the actual dialog doesn’t help (Nolan!): https://www.slashfilm.com/673162/heres-why-movie-dialogue-has-gotten-more-difficult-to-understand-and-three-ways-to-fix-it/

As always, a couple of cute pics of the pups fresh from grooming:

All healed up from the vet stuff earlier. 😁

It seems to me that our weather/seasons have shifted by a month. In July most days went into the triple digits. Here we are in August, the supposed “dog days of summer” and we’re high 80s/mid-90s. What?!

One final bit of nonsense and I’m done. If you’re a fan of low bass singers, check this guy out. He does NOT look like he can pull off these super low notes! Watch to the end to hear a ridiculously LOW note, he’s got quite a range on his voice!

I really like this version of “Far Over the Misty Mountains Cold” from The Hobbit:

Take care!!

  1. Love the Quilting pieces. Can you imagine the time and effort to complete these things? Wow. Takes the time and effort to make these quilts, but also the effort. The dogs look good and the Low bass singer is great. So much for being bored…keep up the good work.

  2. Love the finished projects! Can’t wait to see the Alice in Wonderland patterns. I’ve stumbled on a couple new authors I’ve been binge reading, finishing a full book in 2 or 3 days. If you’re in rut: Simone St. James and Michael Robotham.
